Specs: Windows XP
I can't arrange desktop icons manually. When I right click on desktop and choose
'arrange icons by' the only thing that is checked is 'show desktop icons'. I've tried all options but nothing works.
Many thanks for your help and hi from Canada.

✔ Best Answer
"auto arrange" setting may have got stuck even though it isn't ticked.
Try ticking "auto arrange", restart Windows then untick "auto arrange".
Now try moving icons manually.

Arranging the icons manually means you grab them and move them into the positions you desire. Then you can use the align to grid option to get them in rows.

Are you saying you can't move the icons?

Thank you for your prompt replies. I was so frustrated, after trying many different pointers, that I decided to follow one that suggested I do a system restore. It seems to have done the trick and if the problem occurs again in the future (hope not) I will keep your suggestions on hand to try.
Once again many thanks!
