March 8, 2011 at 20:53:10
Specs: Windows XP
I am overseas, and am trying to access www.ssa.gov and www.socialsecurity.gov. I used to be able to do this, but recently started using a new computer. I get an 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. I am using Kaspersky, and have tried turning this off to no avail. Help!!! :)

Was the browser just updated? Try Firefox.

How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

Hi guapo,

Thanks for your suggestion - I tried using Firefox, but that didn't work either. Just to add more information, I am unable to access the site from either computer at my location, but I am able to access the site from this location if I go through a proxy server (obviously I can't use the site through a proxy server due to the sensitive nature of the information I need to transmit).

If it's accessible through a proxy then there is a filter somewhere. Boot the machine with a Live CD. That might work.

Thanks for this suggestion, although I haven't tried it - when I turned on my computer this morning, I gave it one more try, and to my surprise was able to get into the SSA site without having changed/done anything different! Perhaps it's something to do with my ISP? I also noticed on the site they say:

Online Services Availability
Monday-Friday: 5 AM - 1 AM ET
Saturday: 5 AM - 11 PM ET
Sunday: 8 AM - 11:30 PM ET

Although this doesn't explain my problem because I got a colleague to try from another location and he was able to access the site at the same time that I couldn't.

Very strange, and fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again! Thanks for your asssitance.
