Can't access safe mode

April 17, 2011 at 10:16:43
Specs: Windows XP
Having caught a virus, and tried to uninstall it, I need to restart in Safe Mode, but when I try using f8, the screen locks with 'restart Windows normally' highlighted, but the machine will not accept keyboard input. It won't even take the 'Enter' keystroke to open Windows normally. I have to restart again and not press f8.

If anyone has any ideas what I can do about this I'd be most grateful, thanks.

As you can boot into normal mode you can force it to start in Safe Mode by clicking on Start, clicking on Run and type MSCONFIG. Click Ok and go to the Boot.ini tab. Tick the /Safeboot tick box, click the Apply button, click Ok and then choose to restart teh computer. It will then boot to safe mode. Remember that once you've finished being in safe mode you will need to untick the /Safeboot box. HTH

1- laptop or desktop?
2- Have you tried another keyboard?

I do NOT recommend Response #1's explanation, I used that safe boot command and it totally messed up the PC to the point it had to be reformatted which is NOT fun.

Keep tapping f8 and try safe mode, you may be in the wrong sequence.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
