Can't access floppy disks or zip discs in XP

Specs: Windows XP
15 years ago I had time to write novels. We had a computer with Windows 95, so I stored the novels on 3-1/2 floppies as well as 100 MB Zip disks (parellel port model).

Ever since then I've felt confident that they were safe.

Finally over the holidays I had time to copy them onto our current computer (operating system is Windows XP).

The floppies wouldn't work. XP either wanted to format them or didn't recognize that there was a disk in the drive.

I downloaded the XP drivers for the Zip drive. The computer recognized the zip drive, even gave it a letter, but the same deal with the disks. It either won't recognize that they are in the drive, or it will ask if it can format them.

I'm obviously upset as I feel I've lost all that work. The books are stored all right, but in what apparently are inaccessible vaults. If anyone has any suggestions for breaking into them, please let me know.

Try using a known good floppy disk. Since multiple disks show the problem I suspect it is the drive. If this is the case you could try cleaning the drive heads with a cleaning disk, if you can find one.

Pretty much the same for the ZIP drive.
