Cannot use own picture as desktop background

Specs: Windows XP
A couple of days ago, someone loaded a sonicwall vpn application on my laptop so that I could access their network. they also then used a remote dial-in facility to check a few things out. In doing so, I lost my desktop background and now no longer have the ability to select my own picture as a background, I can only select the standard ms options. I saw a reply from 2007 which suggested going to display properties, then desktop items then customise then select the "web" tab - but I only have a general tab! I assume something has happened to remove my web tab and hence my ability to customise. Any idea on how can I get this back?

... how about opening the "pic" in paint program

... then click file (tab) ... save as background.

... paint might ask you to save the pic! ... save then re-open

The first thing I would do is uninstall the vpn, or take it out of Startup at least, and also make sure any associated service is either set to manual or disabled.

Reboot. If that doesn't work, run a SFC in a command window.

I generally find a photo and right click on it to "OPEN WITH" Select Windows picture and fax viewer. It has the option to set as desktop background doesn't it?

I get the feeling that your original photo may have been on some networked share but dunno what they did to your computer.

Why not tell them to fix it. Why did you let them put all that stuff on it anyway?
