Cannot Run CHKDSK; volume has no direct acces

April 13, 2011 at 05:43:08
Specs: Windows XP
chkdsk will not run. It tells me that the volume can not be accessed; that it is in use by something else. I have tried chkdsk /f/r, restarting, etc. Nothing is working. Chkdsk has not been able to run for quite sometime and my computer is running very very slow.

Go to a cmd prompt.
type chkdsk /r or /f [you don't use both. /f is a file system check whereas /r includes /f but also tests the surface media of the hard drive]
answer yes to the question of run at next boot
reboot so it runs.

then go to accessories/system tools and run disk cleanup with everything checked.

then go back to accessories/system tools and run defragmenter.

Now you system will gain some speed
