Cannot restore computer

August 7, 2010 at 02:15:45
Specs: Windows XP, 3gig/1gig
I cannot restore using system restore. Okay, let me tell you what I have done. That might help with suggestions on what I should try next. I have tried disabling system restore, rebooting and enabling it again. No go. I have tried restoring in safe mode. No go. I have tried disabling system restore, rebooting and enabling it again and then restoring in safe mode. No go. I have tried disabling AVG's resident shield and restoring. No go.

I know I should not depend on system restore to fix everything. However, I would really like to know I can at least use the program.

I have run virus scans, Malawarebytes scans and Spybot Scan and Destroy scans with updated definitions on all and I have come up clean.

Any suggestions on what to do next would be extremely welcome!

Thank you!

Just to add, I also went to Microsoft's troubleshooting page for System Restore and went through all the steps. Unfortunately, there was nothing of help there either.

" I have tried disabling system restore, rebooting and enabling it again"

This removes all previous system restore............ therefore no previous restore points !

You could always try an alternative solution.
I've had varied results using Msoft System Restore so a friend suggested software called ERUNT.
Find it here:

It backs up the registry and it does so each time the system is started. I have used it numerous times when my desktop settings have become mixed up and it has never failed to fix the problems

X86,

Thank you for your reply. I know disabling system restore removes the previous points. However, as I wrote, I could not restore to them anyway. The most common advice when system restore does not work is to disable, reboot and enable it and try again (with a new point of course:-) However, this did not work and does not work for me.

Richard59,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I realize there are other solutions other than using system restore. However, there must be a reason why it is not working on my computer. This is one of my concerns.

I just wanted to let readers know I have resolved the issue finally. I ran both a disk scan (I had it repaired any bad clusters) and disk defragmenter. I then ran system restore in safe mode and it successfully worked.

Thanks to everyone who responded!
