Cannot get rid of Google Chrome-uninstall

System manufacturer / System name

Specs: Windows XP Pro, AMD Athlon XP2400 + 1.5Gb RAM
This problem is driving me mad! Each time I run RegScrub it comes up with just the one problem it finds each and every time. The problem is: L(K) Uninstall - & the full key: sofrware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\GoogleChrome
I just don't seem to be able to rid myself of this. Each time I erase it - either by using RegScrub or by deleting it from the registry - it comes back. I don't use Google as my browser and never go to their site. It is more irritating than a problem, I guess - but any ideas, folks?
I have also come across a strange entry in the registry "GoToBar" and I am wondering if this might point to Google Tool Bar - which, of course, I also neither use nor want.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Peter UK

I appreciate your concern about the registry entry but if that is the only issue my advice would be to stop using RegScrub. Registry cleaners don't improve performance and can sometimes remove valid entries (voice of experience speaking). In the worst case they can stop your computer from booting.

It's hard to say why that entry keeps coming back. About all I can suggest is that you first export a copy of your registry (so you can merge it back if anything goes wrong) then do a registry search for Google and delete everything it finds. Sorry, but I have to say "at your own risk" because there are dragons there LOL.

Please come back and let us know the outcome.

Grateful for your reply, Derek. I've used RegScrub for some years now and have never had a problem but .....

It's just an annoying thing which keeps coming up - maybe I should just ignore it - but, as I said I don't use Google (knowingly) and so I wondered how the heck it got there in the first place and whether it's something lurking in the Registry just waiting to be activated!

Thanks so much for your thoughts on the matter.

Pete

I have found that when downloading various free programs there is often an option to include Google Toolbar. I always refuse it but have still found registry entries later, referring to "time to next reminder" (or words to that effect). So my guess is that your issue might have been caused by something similar.

Strange that the reg entry comes back - have no ideas sorry. Presumably I can take it as read that you have checked in Add-Remove (via Control Panel) and in your browser add-ons?

I've never happened to run into a "GoToBar" reg entry but would not necessarily assume it is Google Tool Bar - there are many strange entries in registries.

I took a look at the link you kindly sent, Derek - and I see what you mean. I think your original suggestion is perhaps the most prudent and I'll leave well alone and just be irritated.; at least my PC is working well just now! As you say, so many websites 'plant 'entries in the registry which just seem to lurk in waiting for an opportunity to cause some future event.

Very many thanks for your time,

Pete

Although I'm from the UK I sometimes think the USA expression "if it aint broke don't fix it" has a lot going for it. Thx for popping back.
