Solved cannot format c drive, says in use

Specs: Windows xp
Try to format c drive to install an older version of windows xp. gone to command prompt. try to format but get errors saying cannot dock drive.

go to my computer, select c drive, right click, select format, says drive in use, don't know what could be running ?

What's running is Windows. You cannot format the system drive from within Windows.

Boot from the installation CD. Early in the installation process you will be given an opportunity to format the drive.

As the others have said, you can't format the hard drive while you're using it, just like you can't change a tire while driving the car.
