cannot connect to the internet

Hewlett-packard Compaq dc7600 desktop

Specs: windows xp home
Hi, I got a used computer that came completely wiped clean and I'm trying to set it up for the kids. I installed Windows xp and it seems to work fine. However, I cannot connect to the internet. I've called my provider and they said I'm missing the network adaptor. I also called a computer store and they advised that I'm missing the driver for the modem. Either way I'm missing something. I took the cover off and it appears that it is FOXCONN brand. There is a spot to plug in the internet cord. I've got another computer that I can connect to the internet with but it has Vista. I tried going onto a website and downloading FOXCONN drivers, but that doesn't seem to work - I was downloading them on a memory stick but they will not run on the new computer.

If the computer you are trying to set up is the HP/Compaq one
you list in your specs, then go to the HP website, look under
'support' & then 'downloads'. Put in the model number and you'll
be guided through choosing your actual model & your operating
system. Just download the appropriate network adapter driver
from there.

... also pop-in the XP CD

... from cd menu click "install optional windows components"

... [OR go to control panel add/remove programs add/remove windows components]

... check "networking services" [also double click it]

... check "internet gateway device discovery and control client"

... might help!

Okay, so I went onto an HP support and download website and downloaded a driver for the modem. Still not working. What happens when I click on the internet is that it brings up a box that says (welcome to MSN explorer) so I nit continue.

At that point it asks you to choose a network connection and hit "connect". So I pick Sasktel since that is my provider (I tried to get my provider to help me, so this part I guess maybe set up). Then when I hit enter it brings up a screen with the user name and password which is saved (it was also provided by my internet provider). then it says error connecting to Sasktel (error 769...). So I'm wondering, does this mean I need to put in a new network adaptor card?

You problem is no longer a Modem Driver issue but an Authentication issue. Only your ISP can help you with this. Call them and gove them the error you gave us.

isp says it's a driver problem still. Apparently I need a driver for my motherboard as it's all connected. How do I tell what driver I need. There are several numbers and names all over the motherboard. I have PAN 102-1-94V-0 and 332-2rev OE S33 and more. I'm just taking each number and googling it, but it's a long process. How do I tell.

I never had a driver work on this computer yet, I got it with no OS and I installed Windows XP and it won't connect to the internet - never did, so I don't know what driver would have worked, as it never did yet. However, the business I got it from had it working with internet connection prior to selling it to me. but they offer no support for set up.
