cannot connect laptop to monitor

Specs: Windows XP, pentium 1.30gh/1.21 ram
laptop cannot connect to monitor. Hi all. I have a packard bell easynote E5 and want to connect to a sony monitor but whilst in display properties I right click graphics options-output to- but it is stuck on netbook I cannot change to another mode. I think this is the problem. Can anyone help?

Greenesp, are you connecting an external monitor to your laptop?
If so, you need to press Fn+F7 to toggle between the two
Laptop and external Monitor. I don't know if you can use them both simultaneously. Fn+F7 is for Lenovo, on your Laptop it could be Fn+F8 or another F key.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have tried the keys but no success
. I forgot to add that the monitor works fine with a mac laptop and a dell latitude. The packard bell works with my old monitor but as I say I cannot change the ''output to'' to accept the new one.
