Cannot Boot Windows

Specs: Windows Vista
Hey all,

So to give you a bit of backup, had a rogue spyware issue, tried removing it and i guess it removed a system file also. I have backed up the documents i need on HDD and now i'm trying to wipe it clean before I re-install Windows XP.

1. Cannot boot in the various safe modes or command prompt by pressing F8 - it takes me to the windows login screen, but the mouse and keyboard do not work.
2. Windows XP setup cannot identify the hdd. But i backed up my data yesterday so i know the HDD is not toast.

What are the next steps here people? Again, just looking to do a wipe and re-install.

If you've backed up your data then you just need to reinstall xp - the install process lets you wipe the drive. You boot from the xp install disk and when it asks where you want to install you have the option of removing and recreating partition or formatting it. Either way will clear it of exiting data. You will need (probably) to download some drivers (like graphics, sound - occasionally xp has them all but not usually).
