Cannot associate file type with new program

Specs: Windows XP
Found an old question for the same problem, however it was never answered. I figured out the solution, but the old quest has been locked. I am posting my solution to help those who have or may encounter the saem issue:

old question

my solution:
1) change the file type association to something that is listed in the OpenWith window.
2) Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:
3) Search for the extension, or search for the program to which you have just associated the file type. In my case, .log is file extension, but the Classes entry turned out to be "log_auto_file".

4) change the value for the 'Default' sub-key from "G:\NCC\SMARTS\tools\original.exe" "%1" to "c:\new.exe" "%1"

My file type would open with NotePad, and I could not change it to Baretail.exe. Tail.exe was listed, so I changed the association to tail.exe, then searched for that in the registry. Hope this helps someone!

This looks easier.

- Right click the file in question.
- Choose "Open With >"
- Click "Choose Program..."
- If your program is not in the list, then,
- Click the "Browse..." button
- Look for the program that you are trying to use
- Select it and hit the "Open" button
- Now you'll see your program in the list
- Click the "OK" button
