Specs: winXP, P4/4GB
Hi,

I have winXP on my machine. I upgraded to 4 GB or ram only to realize it only recognizes 3GB.

Can I upgrade to Win7 without causing my computer to be slow, slow. Here are my specs...

Intel P4 CPU 3.73Ghz
3GB ram (will be 4 with win7)
Hard Drive- 465GB

What if I upgrade to 64bit. will that cause problems with programs I have now, that are 32bit?

The best way to check for compatibility is to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20

This will warn you about most software or hardware incompatibilities before proceeding.

Note that there is no direct upgrade path from XP to Windows 7 so you will need to do a clean install.

With Win7 32 bit you still will not get the full 4 GB.
Don't know about program compatibility with Win7 64 bit. Some will work.

Thank you LM7, will try that now.

Wizard-Fred, that is so lame, because it says 64bit will take up 2gb. So I don't know what's better.

Thanks again to both of you.

Thank you for those links. my intel p4 sucks huh?

I get an error when my computer boots up it says that it doesn't recognize the one ram chip. I tried the suggestions from that first link you posted, I think it's my motherboard, dang it! Thank you so much!

The P4 sucks in general. It was the worst CPU to come out of Intel. It's old news anyways, time to move on.
