Solved Can I uninstall windows 98

January 25, 2014 at 12:45:51
Specs: Windows XP/98
Windows 98 was installed over X.P. Windows 98 will not complete it's set up and gives error message OE 0028 : FF02847B. This is happening on an old Advent 7109B celeron laptop. I cannot get past the windows 98 st up screen-any help/ideas gratefully received. I can get dos working but everything I enter seems to be wrong and I am unsure how to change the drive letter as I am unable to enter anything other than 'C' which is already there.
I do have the Advent recovery disk but it does not seem to like it.

You can't "uninstall" Win98, you will have to completely wipe the HDD & start from scratch. Which OS do you want to reinstall, XP? Do you have the disc? And I don't mean the recovery disk, I mean a "real" disk with the product key. You might be able to do a recovery from the HDD if the partition wasn't wiped out. Instruction will be found at the following site, scroll down to "Using the HDD Recovery System":

EDIT: most likely the problem with the Win98 installation is too much RAM. Why did you attempt to install it in the 1st place?

It could also be that it's trying to install Windows 98 on an NTFS partitioned drive.

If you want to install 98 you should first make sure 98 drivers exist for the hardware. Second, 98 has install problems with more than 512 meg of ram and cpu speed with first edition. You should post back that info if you want to continue with the 98 setup. Otherwise, as already mentioned, format and start over with XP.

I inherited the laptop from my mother, she had Alzheimers so who knows why/how she managed to try to install 98.
Thanks for all the suggestions. She did not have an XP disk but as Microsoft are retiring their help for it I will have another think s to what to do. Yet again all suggestions welcome.

If you can get an xp disk and get it installed it'll run OK. You can download the service packs and it's not like you need all the other alleged 'critical' updates. I never installed any of them.
