Solved Can I install XP Pro SP3 OEM

February 6, 2015 at 13:28:10
Specs: XP
I have a dell 4600 - original Xp SP3 home addition- IE8. Had a suspected virus (?) I had to reformat my HD and then reinstalled OS and got XP SP1 with IE6. IE6 just loops around - won't let me upgrade to SP2 - 3 because it needs IE7+, can't get IE7 because it needs SP2. I purchased a copy of dell XP Pro SP3 OEM. Can I install ok. Getting mixed info.

I would think so. It won't hurt to try. Alternatively you can download the service packs and IE versions here:

http://www.gegeek.com/documents/3DC...

Then burn them to a cd on the computer you're using now and then install on the XP sp1 computer.

When I did xp installs using an old disk I'd do the initial install, then sp2, then ie7, then sp3. Then when I started using IE8 I'd install it on top of IE7 but you may be able to go directly from ie6 to ie8.

You might want to check the discussion here:

and my # 6 there about the cumulative security update for IE8.

"Had a suspected virus (?) I had to reformat my HD"

Reformatting & reinstalling Windows is not the recommended way to remove an infection. But what's done is done. Assuming you didn't wipe out the Recovery Partition, why aren't you just pressing F11 at startup & doing a factory restore? Once Windows is reinstalled, you will have to continually run Windows Update until it catches up. This process will take several hours.

You can use my advice in the other thread DAVEINCAPS linked to or you can use the direct download links, they will certainly work in IE6.

I find the best process to follow is: direct SP3 download > install > restart > and then the direct IE8 download to work the best route. You can completely circumvent the IE6 Windows Update route which doesn't work:

Windows XP Service Pack 3: http://download.microsoft.com/download/d/3/0/d30e32d8-418a-469d-b600-f32ce3edf42d/WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe
