Yes, if you can find all the drivers for that board and chipset.

I would use W7 or Vista or some other linux and then run a virtual machine instead.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

The issue isn't really CPU compatibility as virtually all Intel and AMD processors since the original Pentium are compatible. The real issue is driver availability and in the case of newer hardware that is by no means a certainty. Computers generally work best when the OS and hardware are roughly the same age. I would question the wisdom of putting XP on new hardware.
