Magnetic footprints do remain but after all that time it is almost certain that they will have now been overwritten too many times. Only very expensive equipment (such as that used by the FBI) would have the remotest chance of retrieval.

Derek is probably correct. If you want to be sure you could try a file recovery program. Below is a list of a few.

PC Inspector (freeware)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...
Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs
IMO the best, but not free
GetDataBack

I tend to disagree with that statement as it doesn't recover the origional names of files and that is a big drawback to me.
The only paid one I had great results on was file scavenger, as you found all the origional files and names. It also has a trial to see what is recoverable on the HD and allows so many bytes of info recovery for free.

I have simply copied those names from another helper here at CN and haven't used any of them personally. I would credit the original person but can't recall who it was.

So, what does it do with the names? Trucate them to 8.3?

it just renames them as random number files so they have no meaning as to what the file is

I have used Get Data Back as well as File Scavenger
