How do I reset IBM Thinkpad model 1171 I do not remember the logon password and have no disc's to use. This laptop has been stored in a closet for at least 10 years, and I was just trying to use it to see if it would work.

✔ Best Answer
Rather than doing a reset, try this 1st.

- Tap F8 key at startup to enter Advanced Options.
- From the menu, select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
- At the command prompt, type "net user" (w/o quotes) & press Enter. That will display a list of User accounts, for example - TINKER.
- to change the password for TINKER to "password", type "net user TINKER password" & press Enter.
- if it worked, it will say something like "completed successfully".
- type "shutdown -r" & press Enter
- after the laptop reboots, try the new password.
