When the computer boots, you get a BSOD with the error message being (0x0000007E). I tried booting into safe mode but it stops working with the last driver being mup.sys. I pulled the hard drive out of the computer, put it into another computer as a slave and ran DFT (drive fitness test) and chkdsk. Both came back with a clean hard drive. If I tried to run DFT with the hard drive in the original computer, the program could not find the hard drive. I load xp recovery and when i typed DIR, it told me that there was a problem with drive enumeration. I ran memtest and it came back fine. I'm at a loss for what to check on next. The hard drive seems fine but it is not showing up on the dell e520 (although it is shown in BIOS). I also did a BIOS upgrade but it didn't solve the problem.
Do I have a software or hard ware issue? Is it a driver issue? What should I do next? Any help is much appreciated and I hope I was clear in my descriptions. Please note that it is not my computer and I don't know what service pack was on the system although I suspect at least sp2.
... sounds like a (click >>) Sata driver issue(?)

I like that idea.....any thoughts as to how to do this update when I can't boot into windows? Is there a file I can replace?
... download the appropriate driver and stick'em on a floppy drive. ... bootup with xp cd and do a repair install watch @ the early stages on bottom of screen for <F6> key prompt to add sata driver
... you'll need to reinstall updates afterwards.
... make sure you have cd key!
... perhaps just add sata driver and just reboot(?) << test
