booting Windows from USB caddy in hotels

August 9, 2010 at 19:31:17
Specs: Windows XP
I have a work laptop, compaq 8430, which is locked to network, so only option is to log on to network after boot up.
So when away i cannot use wireless in hotels / maccas etc. I have a usb caddy drive and own hard drive.
can i load my personal windows copy onto my usb hdd, and have it boot a seperate version completely ignoring the work hdd.
The biggest issue here is my only boot options are cdrom or main hdd, so can i somehow programme a usb boot option so i can then load my windows on n go from there?

You ought to use live cd's. They are about the only safe way to log on to hotel systems.

If you insist you will have to fool with xp to even get it to boot to a usb device then you would have to use a cd that "teaches" your computer enough to boot to usb. I assume the laptop does not have usb boot but it may be that you can enable it in bios and I assume you have access to bios.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Response #4 is good. That assumes puppy can configure your hardware, including the WiFi.

However, you mention doing banking in a hotel. I would highly recommend against doing that on any public network. email is OK unless it contains information that you don't want others to gain access to. Browsing, of course, is acceptable.

I would also clear this with your IT department. Information on the laptop may be vulnerable while online.

I recently bought a net book to use for just such occasions.
