Specs: XP -Pro/Win Vista, pent dual core/ 2-6gigs
Have custom built system dual booted with Windows XP pro & Vista. @ start up i would have a choice to select which OS to boot to. Recently my Win.XP gave a message "Boot ini file issue". Now I can not even get to my Vista partition. My win XP OS was not a genuine copy, so i tried to upgrade it with a genuine version. The system is not allowing me to upgrade and I am still getting the boot ini file issue.
anybody Help.

Presumably you started with XP and added Vista to achieve the dual-boot? If so then Vista is now providing the boot-environment - not XP. And even if the other way around.. Vista will again be providing the boot-environment.

And I 'm guessing this is why cannot updgrade/install over the "dubious" version of XP already there... Vista mbr etc. is in the way?

Do you still have the Vista disk(s)?

If you have the Vista disk(s) try a repair of sorts for Vista?

The above reference may help; as the problem appears to a boot issue - not the OS installations themselves?

Useful item to know about (EasyBCD) - tack "Mavis".

However... at this stage I'd be cautious about introducing any outside utlities to restore a dual-boot; as they may compound the problem?

The system "was" OK and now it isn't.. Better to determine why - and thus regain the dual-boot that way?

One can later install the util if needs-be?
