Boot error/pc won't boot from cd

July 24, 2010 at 10:37:55
Specs: Windows XP SP3, E7300
All right right now my pc will get all the way to the windows xp screen the blue lines will start going across like its loading then it flashes the bsod. I stoped it on that screen and it says i have a hardrive error and i need to run chckdsk. Awhile ago i got it to boot to a disc and ran chckdsk and it said it was fine and i went to reboot and it did the same thing. Now i put the windows xp disc in to reformat and it goes to a black screen and flashes that command propt cursor. I've switched hardrives and dvd drives with no luck. Any help would be apprecaited.

Are you using a SATA type hard drive?

What type of WinXP CD do you have? Full version or restore disk?

Watch the POST screens at start up to verify your hard drive is being properly configured by the BIOS.

Are you trying to install to the SATA drive? If so, WinXP does not natively regognize SATA controllers so you need to provide SATA controller. You need to provide the SATA driver when prompted by tapping F6 and supplying it on a floppy disk. If no floppy drive is available then you can slipstream the drivers.

Some BIOS settings have a AHCI setting which when used, will allow the drive to function without the need to supply those drivers.

Do you get an screen message to hit any key to boot from the CD? If not, then either the boot order is set wrong or your CD is NG.

Even if the CD works you still need to follow #3.
