Specs: Windows XP
I have a Dell Demsion 2350. At start up I get a black screen and the after 4 or 5 minutes I get my log on screen and I can log on. I do not get a Dell logo or systems logo or anything else before windows log on. I can not access the System Setup. If I hit F2 or F12 or any other key, the computer freezes. I have done varies virus scans and it has come up clean. I am also conected to Trend Micro through Client and it is clean. Any ideas?

You might have a memory issue. Download Memtest, when you open it it will allow you to make a bootable floppy or CD so you can test your RAM from outside of windows. (make sure that the drive you are using is first in boot order first).
If any of the tests fail or fail to complete, see if you have more than one memory stick, if you do, test each one separately, replace as needed.
If you cannot boot to the Memtest or you cannot access your BIOS settings, you may have a problem with your motherboard.
If these check out ok, try booting to your Windows disk, if you are able to, do a repair from the disk

Thank you for the quick response. I am testing the RAM as we speak. I have 1g of ram (2 boards). I will let it run for a couple of hours per instructions and se what happens. I am at 64% on the first pass and 0 errors. I will keep you up to date.
Thanks again,

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.
As for my laptop, after a long time of non-use, it took over an
hour to boot the first time.
