Hello, I'd like to do spyware/registry/anti-virus scans in safe mode as scans will sometimes freeze or show up an error message that prevents completion of the scan. In safe mode all external drives show up except a maxtor external backup hard drive. There is also a removeable hard drive that came with the computer, and that one shows up OK as well as all the drives on my photo card reader...why not the maxtor backup? It has majority of my material on it and I want to make sure it is scanned/fixed as well. I have tried unplugging it while in safe mode, plugging it in while in safe mode, plugging it in while off and restarting, etc. Nothing makes it recognized in safe mode. It's usually plugged in and on all the time. It's accessible and visible just fine in normal boot mode, and all the shortcuts and links to maxtor and program files, etc., are accessible in safe mode, but when I go to 'computer' cannot find the icon and when I go into the software portion, all is OK there except it says it cannot find the device, please plug it in/turn it on, etc.

Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

safe mode isn't loading the driver for the interface the drive is connecting to.

sorry I don't have any suggestions on altering the safe mode boot to load that driver.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

OK, well thank you for the answer, wanderer. I can only do so much on my own before taking it in. And at least I know I can't fix this one! :)

Safe-Mode uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to
start Windows. And alot fewer Processes running in the background.

Thanks, Chuck. I have run the registry/spyware/malware/anti-virus scans on the computer in safe mode and all scans ran OK with no freezes or error codes or failed scans and cleaned out over 400 registry errors...but no scans done on the backup drive. I don't know if it's possible that the drive is causing my problem? I've had the machine run slow; needs to be rebooted because it freezes on startup; says its low on virtual memory; takes a REALLY LONG TIME to really get turned on in the morning...say 45 minutes before it stops making all that startup noise and is responsive to commands. Just got a feeling that all is not well... i had to remove and reinstall some spyware because it just kept freezing up and acting slow. But now I will get a chance to see how it performs with all scans done and registry cleaned up. Thanks for all the help!
