OK, here is my problem. Computer had many viruses and spyware. After removal, windows was very corrupted. Did a windows install, but left files in tact. Before doing that, I backed up the program files, drivers and all other files that most people want to keep. After the install, I restored all this information. The program files are on the c drive but they don't show up in the all programs menu. How do you get them to do that? Thanks in advance.

I think emachines has a special way to do what you did. The file system might have been put into a folder under C called something like backup or such. It is a copy of your old system.
I would not trust any of it if you have had a lot of virus issues.

The restore should have put all the OEM software back on. It would be up to you to re-install all of the software.

Now if you only did a XP repair then the data would be on the drive where it was and you still have to reload the programs.

I also may not fully understand exactly how you "restored" it.

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid of that. It is exactly as you said, all the files are on the c drive, but they are not in the all programs menu. So all those programs will have to be reinstalled?

I believe that is correct. You need to reinstall programs. You may be able to keep the preferences in some, but they need installing again.
