Audio lag issues

Firstly, this laptop is probably about 5-6 years old. It was my grandfathers, and now mine. I've had it for maybe 3-4 years.

So last year, I got on my computer one day to discover that the sound is all messed up and laggy. It was like, I'd try to play a song or a video, but one sound would drag out, seeming like lag. My brother tried playing with the settings and I guess he ended up turning on echo, and I haven't been able to fix that either. In turn, this ended up lagging up my whole system. I've tried plugging in head phones and speakers but it still sounds the same. I've also tried using my televsion as an alternate monitor and playing sound from the tv but it still sounds the same. It's about the same now, the sound still lags but when I first start a video (for the very first time since I've turn my computer on) the sound will only be echoing but after awhile it'll start to lag and continue to if I try another video. So is this a software problem or a hardware problem? D:

Thanks in advance.
