You need to explain more clearly. And listing your system specs is always helpful. Are you trying to install XP SP3 from scratch? or do you already have XP installed & you're trying to upgrade to SP3?

It's best to download SP3 (316MB), then install it, rather than getting it thru Windows Update.

Sorry about lack of prob. descr. I have an old Dell dsktp running WinXP and I did not have SP3 installed. Bought a Cisco USB wireless adaptor to use on my wifi network and when I attempted to install the software, I rcvd an alert stating I must install SP3 to continue. I went through Win Updt to install and 5 times in a row, I received the "Service Pack 3 setup error. C:\windows\system32\drivers\acpi.sys is in use by other user or application". Close applications and retry. I ran searches and found evidence of 5 files in various folders all having the same size, but different dates. I ran my Vscan software - AVG - and rcvd no hits. I turned off Search & Destroy thinking this was a false positive. Unfortuntely, I'm not sure I can run Win-7 as my OS because the age of my processor and the RAM. I'm running a verification currently to determine if my desktop is minimally configured to run Win-7. I really want to get my OS to steady state but cannot until I install SP3. I took your advice and went to the source to download the ptf's. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep you posted as to progress and hopefully this approach will remediate.

No good. Same message. "The file C:\windows\system32\drivers\acpi.sys open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry"
Thanks for your suggestion. I'll keep looking.

Yep. I indicated in earlier thread I'm running WinXP and trying to apply SP3. This is not a re-install. I also dwnldd SP3 as suggested earlier in February and then began installation. No diff in ReturnCode. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to reformat and reinstall the OS from scratch and then apply SP1, 2 & 3. Happy St. Paddy's Day. Cheers !! (One day early of course) Allows more time to drink pints o'plain) Slainte`

I have XP Pro with SP2 in the same configuration as it was received back from warranty repair. I now need to install SP3 in order to upgrade to Office 10. When I start the SP3 install, it runs until it comes to the "inspecting current configuration" message. About 3-4 minutes later, I get the dreaded "acpi.sys is open or in use ..."
and everything comes to a screeching halt.

Because the only disk drive I have is NOT a SATI drive and I have no other external devices, it seems like my system would not normally have either acpi.sys or acpiec.sys in use. Consequently, I have booted into safe mode with my wireless turned off in hardware and then tried copying acpi.sys and acpiec.sys an alternative location in a different directory on the hard drive and then renaming the two files in place as well as removing the two files. Neither way works.

Can anybody make any suggestions that might work to get this darn acpi stuff out of the way so I can get SP3 installed (which should replace the already installed acpi* files from looking at the list of files in SP3), please?

Thank you for any light you're able to shed.
