January 4, 2012 at 16:52:15
Specs: Windows XP, Intel Atom N270 processor
The error message:
the \windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt
can attempt repair by starting Windows setup using the original Setup CD ROM
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

How do I boot from an external drive? or flash drive?

Connect an external drive to your e-machine and press "Esc" as it boots. This will give you the opportunity to boot from a CDROM.

Thank you, but holding the Esc key does not cause the external drive to boot. The external drive whirrs (with or without the Esc key), on startup, but it does not boot.

Pressed F2, while booting, which started the BIOS Setup Utility, and changed the settings to boot from the CD/DVR. Then restarted and pressed Esc. Eventually it booted. Ewen, thank you, very much.

This raised another issue. When booting the restore disk, there was no 'r'epair option, instead numerous prompts asking do I really wanted to "Restore the system image to the hard drive". Sounds like I lose my files & programs. Is there anyway to backup before recovery?

Create a Linux Live CD, boot off it, copy your files to any external USB device, then you can run the restore disc. But doing a restore should be the "last resort", not the 1st. What else have you tried?

Ridder, thank you. I researched and was able to successfully create a bootable Linux USB stick. The next challenge is how do I use it?
