aol interferes with windows update service

Hewlett-packard / 3 or more years old

Specs: Windows XP
Supporting friend via Logmein. Computer has AOL 9.1, but am afraid to update to 9.5, since it is remote support, and AOL upgrades can be unpredictable. Computer works fine - except cannot get Windows updates. (updates page stalls at progress bar where it says "Checking for the latest updates for your computer...". I have checked for Background Int. Svc, and Automatic updates svc (made sure both set to automatic and both started); reregistered over 20 DLLs; renamed the Windows SoftwareDistribution folder.
Contacted MS - but am not sure it is worth troubleshooting with them - since following all their steps only further screwed up another system. My own instincts seem to generally get me further...
In this case, I have a feeling it is AOL interference. The Windows Update page is the only thing that seems to have a problem. Thanks very much for any help!

Try Windows Update thru Internet Exploer.

If you are using a router, remove all the AOL crap..

Did both, I'm afraid. Nothing seems to help....
