Alt code not working

I installed Japanese language packs into my computer. By "installing", I mean I set it as a language for non-unicode programs.

After I did this, I found myself unable to use most alt codes in general, and none that used only ALT and a single number.

When I try, usually nothing happens. Question marks are the second-most common occurance. Sometimes I might get something, but it's rare; and it's nothing I want.

I have tried uninstalling the language, but this doesn't change anything, and only makes it so I can't see japanese in general on my computer. I reinstalled it seeing as how there was no change and I want japanese on there.

So, how can I get my ability to use alt codes back to normal?

Cruithne, SWAG, my guess is because of the language. I'd expect Japanese to use a whole different set of codes.
Copy the ones you want into the Japanese character set? That should make them available.

Thing is, a lot of my friends online with japanese language packs work with it just fine.

Also, I usually keep the language set to english, so I don't think that it should keep me from posting them.

By the way, how do I copy the ones I want into the japanese character set?
