After IE8 install my computer is screwed.

Specs: Windows XP, 1.60 GHz/1.25 GB
My computer was working fine until my computer decided to prompt me to install IE8. I was distracted and guess I clicked yes to the install and afterwards my computer is not the same. I cannot access system restore (it will not come up the first time I click on it and when it does the second time the entire box is BLANK/white), my internet is not searching from my home page but if I type in it can search from there, when I go to facebook, for example, the only thing that shows up on the page is the blue strip at the top with facebook and my account at the right, my CD drive is not wanting to read the discs when I put them in each time and I have to try a bunch sometimes before they show up, my outlook seems to be getting mail but normally I see more mail than this so I don't know if I am missing any emails,I uninstalled IE8 and reverted back to the IE7 for windows XP ( Did I mention I have windows XP?), I have tried to do everyhing I can to fix this but nothing is working.
I have tried the recommended regsvr32jscript.dll and the other suggestions to run the registry files (or whatever) but errors come up with the dll file can't be found. I have tried going into the BIOS and using a friends XP home edition but the drive is not working OR it just isn't able to fix the issue. I have tried the SFC scannow in the run box and it seems that it is not picking up or correcting the issues,I have tried to reinstall windows XP but I also get an error for that as well.(maybe the CD I got from my friend isn't complete or right but then why woudl the SFC work or seem like it is working and finish the scan?)
I can't think of anything else... I hope this is enough info to go on to help me. I am desparate. Thanks

P.S. I don't know much about computers just am good at reading directions. NOrmally I can fix small issues with my computer but this one is really starting to piss me off. It seems like something simple but so far it hasn't been. Thanks in advance for any replys that may help. Also I don't have a lot on my computer I have 31.9 GB free space on my drive out of 74.5GB total ( I think I got a new drive last time I got it fixed with more space so the info I gave for CPU/Ram is from the properties tab for "my Computer if that makes sense...I'm a bit sleep deprived at the

Most of the things you mentioned have nothing to do with IE8. Which version of IE were you running previously, IE6 or IE7? You should be using IE8 in 2011, either that or a different modern browser (Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, etc). But if you think it's the cause of your problems, all you have to do is uninstall it - Control Panel > Add or Remove > Windows Internet Explorer 8 > Remove.

Then try installing it the right way:

I did uninstall the IE8 correctly and used the microsoft website to install the previous version (which I believe is IE7). My issue seems to be that I am missing dll files and scripting on some websites and programs.(I don't know much about computers but I think that is what the problem is). I may just reinstall windows and start from scratch but wanted to see if I could avoid having to transfer my files and all that mess.
The only thing I did differently was install IE8 and that is when things started acting up so I think it is safe to ASSUME it is the install that did it since a lot of what I was reading about dll files and issues like the one I am dealing with can be caused by installations. A friend of mine said she had the same thing happen with IE8 and ended up reinstalling XP only to upgrade to windows 7 later but that it did the same thing so it is possible. Thanks for the reply though I appreciate you taking the time to help.
