add hardware install wizard for deleted hardw

March 14, 2011 at 10:19:15
Specs: Windows XP
I installed then uninstalled an Epson Scanner that I returned for credit. Now at each startup, the install wizard wants to reinstall the scanner. I cannot find a way to stop this action. In Device Manager, the scanner is shown, but as a yellow question mark icon. The properties for this icon states that "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)". I can delete this scanner but upon startup again, it puts it back in Device Manager like before. How can I stop this action since I do not have the scanner to reinstall and don't want to. I have installed an Epson All In One printer that does the scanning instead. I wonder that when I originally uninstalled the first scanner, all files or commands were not deleted. I can't find any files when I do a search for the old scanner.

Probably some registry entries remaining - maybe some files too (although they usually matter less). There are various ways you could tackle it:-

You might be able to find it in msconfig startup tab If so, untick it and it will stop it bothering you, although still being partly present.

I don't normally advocate registry cleaners due to the risk but you could run the one in CCleaner (free) and let it remove anything that is to do with the old scanner. I have more faith in the CCleaner registry cleaner feature than others.

Finally, probably better, would be to do system restore to a time just before you installed the old scnanner.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

Derek, thanks so much for your recommendation to ccleaner. It found the files still remaining and correct the situation. Have a blessed day.

Tread a bit carefully with the registry cleaner feature. Reg Cleaners can sometimes take out valid entries but CCleaner is one of the "safer" ones. Glad to hear it worked for you and thx for letting us know.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.
