Trying to install a game, but it calls for a 3D video accelerator. Will any downloadable one work with my video card or does it have to be specific?

If I am reading this right, your '3D video accelerator' IS your video card AND it's proper drivers.
Your Spec's stock:

T1742 Support Information

Operating System : Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Chipset : Intel® 845GL chipset
Memory : 128MB DDR (PC2100)
Hard Drive : 40GB HDD
Optical Drive : 48x Max. CD-ROM Drive; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD
Video : Intel® Extreme Graphics 3D (845GL shared)
Sound : AC '97 Audio
Network : 10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet
Modem : 56K ITU v.92-ready Fax/Modem
Peripherals : Keyboard, Wheel Mouse, Stereo Speakers
Ports/Other : 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 on front), 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2, Mic-In & Head Phone jack on front, Audio-In & Out, 3 PCI slots (2 available)

Your Graphics stock is 3D but very limited by today's standards and not really for gaming. I do notice only PCI expansion though. A PCI Video card would be limited too, but if you need to upgrade, there are those available that will give you quite a bit more than you have stock. Look into specific game requirements to see what card spec's are required and other requirements. Post additional game/video card specific questions in the gaming forum.

Hopefully you have more than just 128MB RAM. If not, you need more...lots more! Your board has 2 memory slots & can accept up to 512MB per slot for a total of 1GB. I suggest you max out the RAM amount.

Plus a PCI video card:
