2003 Server Group Policies

August 16, 2010 at 20:38:56
Specs: Windows 2003 Server

I accidentally applied a policy to a Windows 2003 server that:
-removed Run command from the Start Menu
-Disabled command prompt
-hid my A, B, and C drive
-removed shut down from the start menu
-removed access to the control panel

If I do a Resultant Set of Policies, all of the items in the report that I mistakenly applied to the server and the Administrator account are "Local Group Policy" type.

No matter what I do, I can't seem to undo my changes...or if I do make the changes to the policy, it won't apply them even if I power down and restart the server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi janvds,

Although I'm no expert in AD, I'll try my best to help!
I've seen these settings before - they are quite restrictive to say the least. Can you remove the GP altogether and start from scratch with another? Also, restarting the server may not give you the result you're looking for - it's going to attempt to migrate your new policy settings across the domain. You can also force a policy update by typing "gpupdate" at the command line. This may save you from having to bring the server up and down.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
