You are using the wrong keyboard language settings. (US keyboard instead of UK or vice versa). Have a look at this article.

The language settings are English UK, I have tried US English as well but to no avail. When I press the @ key I get " (double apostrophes - above 2 key) and vice versa.

Use AltGr+2 to produce @ on non US keyboard.

Did you ckeck the keyboard language settings (i.e. the Default input language)? Your symptoms are a classic case of US key board with UK input (if <shift>-2 is marked ") or the other way round (if <shift>-2 is marked @).
