windows vista suddenly won't reconize my long time password

May 15, 2017 at 20:24:45
Specs: Windows Vista
On May 14, 2017 I logged in to my Windows Vista on HP laptop using my long time password and user name. Due to the recent news about ransomware I had Norton 360 run an update; no problems were detected.
Then I locked the machine and came back one hour later. The software wouldn’t accept my password when I tried to log in under my standard user name; I tried about 7 times with no luck.
Recently there was one day when I had to try logging in three times before my password was recognized; that was also using my longtime user name and password. I did get in on the third attempt.
What do you advise? I do not have a USB with a password reset on it.

It's easy to remove or recover a Windows logon password. In fact, it's so easy that it's almost pointless to set one up in the 1st place. I've never used the software suggested by Johnw, but I use the one below fairly regularly.
