In spite of the problems with Vista it is still much more reliable than then Win9x could ever be. Vista has many more features. Vista will run modern applications while Win9x does not.

Win9x was a hybrid 16/32 bit system designed for full compatibility with old 16 bit applications. Many compromises were necessary to fulfill this goal. The NT line, of which Vista is a member, was not constrained this way.

Windows 7 is considered by many to be much better than Vista.
