why wmp and win quicktime diss MP4, Mpeg2

Specs: Vista SP2, core 2 duo 8 gig ram
I simply can't believe that in a modern operating system the embedded player can't recognize a 10year old format.. seems WMP 11 can't play MP4 video.. irst it said irt didn't recognize the format, and then when i opened it anyways, i only got audio.. although i got quicktime to play it i should never have ever had to.. i'm stunned.. but right after, i tried opening an mpeg file in quicktime , and guess what.. IT couldn't open it and i had to get WMP to open it..
Getting away from this kind of BS , having to have a different 3rd party app for every different file format , is the reason i upgraded in the first place.. Am i to understand that STILL nothing has changed, or is Vista totally hooped.. I know it would seem a media player issue, but it's up to the OS to assign file types etc...

What's up? anyone know how i can avoid having to have a 'gaggle' of different media players..

I'm not sure what your trying to say here, if the OS doesn't have the proer codecs, it's not going to play the file.

Yes, all you need is VLC player, it will play just about everything out there.

I guess i didn't make myself clear enough.. of course the os had the proper codecs or I wouldn't have been able to play them at all.. I was simply saying that they weren't recognized..
I guess i have to use VLC again.. but my point was more that these aren't obscure formats, so why arent they supported .. i can't believe that WMP doesn't know what an MP4 is..!
