Your information is a "little vague/incomplete"...

What make/model headphones etc.

As best I know headphones don't have an on/off switch - unless they're noise cancelling. And even the then (at least those I am familiar with) still work as conventional headphones if the noise cancelling option is switched off.

If you plug your headphones into an active socket (one that has a signal present) what happens?

You can buy an in-line volume control for headphones, so you could turn it down to zero if you wanted to. This sort of thing:

As said, we need to know what make and model number of headphones you mean so that we can identify the feature you are mentioning. There are stacks of different headphones around and most have no on/off switch built in.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

My AKG K271 MKII studio headphones have a built-in switch
which shuts off the sound when they are lifted off the head.
That can be disabled or re-enabled by rotating a thingie on
the headband where the headband attaches to the earcup
on the same side as the cable attaches (left side).

Possibly the "instruction" johnhallm has is for more than
one model of headphone, not all of which have a switch.
