Specs: Windows Vista
Windows Vista (HP) laptop gives message: "No bootable device, insert boot disk and press any key" I've tried control, alt, delete and nothing happens. What does this message mean and how do I fix the problem?

Check if there is any disk in the CDRom

If not try changing the boot order in the BIOS
These are the usual keys for entering BIOS to press on startup.

* {Delete} (modern Award and AMI BIOSes)
* {F2} (modern Phoenix BIOSes)
* {Ctrl}+{Alt}+{Esc}
* {Ctrl}+{Esc}
* {Alt}+{Esc}
* {Ctrl}+{Alt}+{S}
* {F1}

Once you are in the BIOS setup, check for Boot order option. Change it to Hard Disk and see if you can boot.

If the laptop used to boot OK before and this is a new problem then this could be because:

1. You left a non bootable CDROM in the CDROM drive
2. You left a non bootable floppy in the floppy drive
3. You left a non bootable USB stick in a USB slot

If non of the above is true then it is likely that you have a problem with your hard disk as it does not appear to be detected at start up in the BIOS.

You will need to investigate why this is happening. The main possibilities are a bad hard drive or bad connection

When everything else fails, read the instructions.
