Vista Worth The Upgrade

Specs: Windows XP Home Edition, Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.20GHz, 4 Gigabytes RAM
I'm deciding whether I want to upgrade from Windows XP Home to Windows Vista. I've read a lot about how many glitches the software has, and I was wondering if it is worth getting. Soon after I will probably be getting Windows 7, but I might be using Vista for a few months. So I was wondering if Vista is at least reliable enough that it won't destroy all of my files within the first few months I use it. Here are my specs:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 With Hyper-Threading @ 3.20 GHz - Pass
RAM: (4) 1 GB Chips - Pass
HDD: 40 GB With 16.5 GB Free - Meets
Graphics: Nvidia FX5200 128MB AGP - Meets

I think it will do okay, but I've never used the OS, so can someone give me some advice on this please.

Wait until you get windows 7. Many people returned to XP from Vista.

Well see, I want to keep all of my programs and settings, so I first wanted to upgrade to Vista, then a few months later once I have saved up the money, upgrade to Windows 7.
