Vista corrupted, need to save data

April 1, 2009 at 23:47:02
Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel core 2 duo, 3GB ram
I have a Dell studio laptop that has windows
vista home premium installed on it.
The vista suddenly got corrupted. The only
thing that happened was that the battery got
drained and the computer shut down. After
that, I connected it to the power adapter and
restarted it.
Since then, Vista has been stuck on the
welcome screen and it does not get to the
desktop. Vista asks the admin to login and
after entering the password, it gets stuck on
welcome screen. Even system restore is not

I basically have a lot of important data that I
need to backup.

Is there any way for me to do this?

I only have one partition on my laptop and this
partition has all my data and it also has vista
installed on it.
I can access the cmd but not the desktop and
the start etc menus.

I do have the vista boot CD that dell provided
with the laptop.

However, I think re-installing vista on the same
partition may erase all data. I am not sure
about this. I don't want to try it out until I am
sure else it will erase all data.

I have an external HDD and just want to
transfer the data somehow from my laptop
HDD to the external one, if possible.
After that I don't mind scraping vista and/or
reinstalling it.

Please let me know if this is somehow
possible and what all things to try.

Hello techgeek20 ,

I think your first move should be a start up repair as in this

post , response # 2

It may be that your Dell disk is for reinstall only I don't know

As for back up soft ware I use Acronis 11 true image as I

know this works , a new complete image every month is what

I do , after " up date Tuesday " .

I use live linux (or xp) cd's to boot to. Then I save data off either via usb or cd/dvd or network. I'd use that before I got too far along with your repair process.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
