Vista computer freezes immediately after logging in

Specs: Vista, 2.81 Core2Duo with 6GB
I'm fixing a computer for a friend and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. He claims that nothing has changed and it suddenly started doing this just today. Basically the taskbar freezes almost immediately after logging in to any of the profiles and I can't even open task manager via CTRL+ALT+DEL to try and end explorer.exe and then re-open it. I can't open any of the apps on the desktop but I can hover over them and the faded outline will show up but then even those will freeze and the mouse becomes the only thing that isn't frozen.
I can open in Safe Mode and do everything with no problems. So I opened msconfig and did a clean boot and I even ran Malwarebytes and did a system scan to find no infected files. I also tried to make a new profile in the hope that it might just be a corrupted login but that also didn't work. It froze almost immediately as well.

Did you update malwarebytes before you ran it? If not, try that. By clean boot, did you disable all in msconfig? That would be the best way.

The next thing would be, go back into safe mode & see what it says in the event viewer.

I disabled all that wasn't a Microsoft service in msconfig, yes. I updated Malwarebytes before running it and still nothing. What am I looking for in event viewer?

Disable ALL in msconfig startup. You can always re-enable it later.
Look for any ERRORS in red, in the event viewer.
