Specs: Windows Vista
attempting to upgrade to Windows 7 on Lenovo R400. Backup stymied by CD drive - no prompt with insertion of CD-R - not recognised - "there is no disk in the drive".

Does the CD unit (presumably it's a CD/DVD unit) play CD and DVD OK?

Test it with standard commercial pre-recorded disks; e.g a music CD and perhaps video DVD?

Also I would use DVD for backups as they obviously have larger capacity.

Yeah, doesn't windows 7 come on DVD? Or did you make a set of installation disks on CD? Obviously if you put a DVD disk in a cdrom it won't be recognized.
