unspecified changes made to configuration sys

May 15, 2011 at 16:45:05
Specs: Windows Vista
I have tried start up repair several times ( I have a black screen but can access sme things with task manager) I get a message in the details that the root cause is " unspecified changes might have been made to the configuration system" I have tried all restore points. Nothing works. Are there more restore pints hiding somewhere...from earlier perhaps? I'm sure this was the result of a virus which has been removed.

The problem with virus's is that they do this sort of thing. Even after you remove it there may be issues.

I'd get my personal data off to some drive. Then I'd recover the system to OEM state. See owners manual for how to. Then get all MS updates and put a good security suite on it.

I figured I would have to do a complete reformat. I have one program with no disk for reinstallation. There's no way to back that up, huh? Is there any way to get into windows back-up restore? I can't find it through task manager.

Might be able to but it is a long way around. Ntbackup can save both the app an the registry entries.

I'd look to replacement apps maybe. Many free ones like OpenOffice would suit most people.
