Unable to update windows for almost 1 year

Specs: Windows Vista
Hi have prob with my laptop. I haven't been able to update windows for nearly a year now. also i cannot connect to windows live messenger. Its not a virus as i run malwarebytes, spybot , cc cleaner regular all at the mo are showing no probs. I have requested help on various sites to no avail but i recently got another clue as to what the problem might be however i do not know enough about it to be able to fix it!!! last week i downloaded my publisher software to do a home coffee table book. all went well finished book & attempted to upload it for print. even though i was connected to the internet i kept getting the message that my pc was not connected to internet, i spoke to a customer support agent from my publisher on live chat & he said that my pc had issues connecting to their servers i then had to upload the book from my daughters laptop which incidentally is on same connection as my laptop via router so i know that it is not a connection issue so the problem is with my laptop.

Any advice to solve this age old prob would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Sounds like something a combo security utility might be responsible for ... do you have Norton, McAfee & co installed on the PC?

AVG free, but tried to update after deleting everything (antivirus, spybot etc...) still no go! it seemed to happen after a windows update.

I would remove Symantec & ZoneAlarm completely while trying to resolve this. It's probably one of them.

If you can generally access web pages but not one's like MS updates and maybe other's I'd still think a virus or rootkit.

Try command nslookup for the web pages in question.

if you waited this long, I would say you have lots of viruses, etc. Anytime critical updates are not kept uptodate is when you run into lots of problems.
Try trojan remover and Hitman Pro and remove all they find.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
