This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Specs: Windows Vista, 4gb
Device Manager shows a USB Composite Device giving “This device cannot start. (Code 10)” error. I believe that it controls my internal multimedia devices as I am unable to get my SWD/MMC port to show my SD card when inserted. When I try to update the driver, it says the installed driver is up to date. Tried online solutions but they did not fix the problem. Suspect registry issues.

Try uninstalling the card reader in Device Manager (right-click > Uninstall) then restart Windows to make it re-detect the card reader and it should re-install the generic driver automatically from the Windows driver library on your PC.

If this is a desktop, then you may want to check re-seat the cable that goes to your motherboard. It maybe connected at the card reader as well.

If this is a laptop or a desktop. Take a flashlight and shine it into the card slot, are any of the pins bent or touching each other?
