Specs: Windows Vista
A window responds when I double click to open a file. The window always says "Opening..." and names the file. It then states--"You have chosen to open...."
The next statement is--
"which is a: Application";
the entry below that statement says--
"from: C:/users/test/dwhelper";
and finally an entry asks--
"Would you like to save this file?"

But it gives me only 1 of 2 options:
either "Save File" or "Cancel."
Yet it never ever actually lets me open that file !
...Also, strangely, a number of my desktop icons have been changed
to Firefox icons (with the shortcut arrow still within the icon), and some of them (like Apple Safari) refuse to return to the original icon when I try to click back to the original icon....Is there a connection between
these 2 afflictions?

I use Norton 360 security and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, so doubt that any viruses have attacked my system.

Did you check the targets of Applications in their Shortcut>Properties window which you want to run?

Meanwhile dwhelper is a downloadhelper. Try to uninstall it and check again what will happen when you try to open an application..

I agree with Latte, try uninstalling dwhelper and see if this solves it. Sounds like something has changed the programs associated with opening certain files. Even though you have antivirus installed, you should not rule out the possibility of a virus infection. Update your AV software and run a full system scan right away.
