Sudden loss of internet connection

Earlier today I was browsing the internet with no problems. I shut down the computer and returned later for another session. I get a message which says I have no internet connection. It says I may have a DNS problem and it could not ping www.microsoft.com. My provider is Verizon. I checked a down report site and it indicated that Verizon is fine. Any ideas on what might be going on? Thanks!

I’ve looked at the links above. What type of server am I diagnosing? Or rather what protocol does dns use? Thanks!

DNS is its own protocol. Are you sure DNS is the issue here? Can you ping 8.8.8.8? What do you get if you run the following?
nslookup www.microsoft.com 8.8.8.8
